Avoid These 4 Foods to Protect Your Gums

Certain foods are more likely to damage your dental health when compared to the rest. So, you need to know the food that you must strictly avoid.

You should avoid these foods if you want to protect your gums. For most diet tips to maintain your oral health, contact Allure Dental in Fulton, Maryland.

Foods With High Sugar Content

Candies, chocolates, and even some types of bread are high in sugar. Sugar can be particularly harmful to your oral health.

The bacteria in your mouth react when they come in contact with the sugar in the foods you consume and produce plaque. Plaque is responsible for diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. If the candies you eat are sour, they also produce an erosive acid that can damage your teeth.

Acidic & Citrus Foods

Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit contain citric acid which can erode tooth enamel over time and affect your gum health. Ideally, you should limit your intake of such fruits and rinse your mouth after consuming them.

Potato Chips

One of the most addictive foods ever made, potato chips is a big NO as it contains a whole load of starch. You can have a few but you know that you are not going to stop until the packet is over. The starch in the chips turns into sugar and encourages the growth of bacteria in the mouth.

If you can’t give up on these munchies, at least make sure you don’t forget to brush and floss your teeth after having them.

Dried Fruits

Dried fruits are often considered to be healthy. But that doesn’t mean you can go on having every dried fruit you find in the market. Dried fruits like apricots, prunes, and raisins are difficult to get off your teeth as they are sticky and clingy in nature. Again, this means a lot of leftover sugar in your mouth.

If you have a liking for fruits, then it's always better to choose the fresh ones as they have comparatively less sugar in them.

It can be difficult for you to avoid certain foods from your diet. But that doesn’t mean it is impossible. Start small by limiting your intake and slowly shift to healthier options completely.
